September 16th, 2011
Dealing with friends or family when trying to help them find a job, or offering them one, can be a very tricky situation.
Trying to help someone find a job is not always a good idea. A job is always a potential career opportunity. Job seekers often want to hold off on applications until the “right job’ comes along. Suggestions from you can often be taken as criticisms of their current unemployment. A related problem is that you always really don- t know what their skills and experience is.You can find a quick rundown here There is a danger of referring them to something they are not qualified for; or, something they are overqualified for.
Offering a job to a friend or family member is even worse. If they don-t get hired then it-s your fault because your influence was lacking. If they do get hired then you become responsible for them. When they go down in flames you will be blamed because you recommended them. It-s a bad position for you to be in no matter what happens.
The best way to handle this situation is wait for people to come to you. At that point you can offer general suggestions on how they can proceed.
