The North East of England has one of Europe’s biggest and most significant chemical clusters. More than 30,000 people work directly or otherwise in the sector, and it is seen as a growing rival to Antwerp, Rotterdam and Houston as further investment brings new developments.

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is a Centre of Excellence set up to bring substantial benefits to the process industries of the UK. CPI is delivering its key business objectives, including research opportunities, partnering and joint ventures and building a competitive cluster.

The Centre of Excellence will drive forward applied research and development in the process sector through collaboration with industry partners and with world-leading research Universities. CPI will be working with companies that form 50% of the UK’s Petrochemical Industry, 33% of the UK’s Pharmaceutical Industry and are the largest GDP producer in the Region.

The Wilton Centre at Tees Valley on the south side of the River Tees provides the focal point of expertise. Facilities there include advanced laboratory space, utilities services, and research and pilot plant facilities.
