The Centres of Excellence - on five key technology areas - act as the focal point for the commercialisation of regional science. They 'condition' research and technology so that it can be utilised for commercial purposes, enter the marketplace as a new and innovative product, process or service, and thus enhance the Region's competitiveness and Productivity.

CELS provides commercialisation services to the bio-economy. CELS operate across the entire spectrum of life sciences, but are particularly interested in "flagship" areas where the region already has a strong research base, clinical capability and indigenous companies.

CENAMPS is the Centre of Excellence for Nanotechnology, Micro and Photonic Systems. The Cenamps vision is of a resurgent, knowledge-based economy where high value is added through creation of a vibrant Regional cluster, commercially applying small-scale technologies.

Codeworks, the Digital Centre of Excellence, is identifying and backing new technologies and digital media applications to reinforce existing, and establish new, digital industries - focusing initially on Accessibility, Games Development, Grid Computing and Web-based services.

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is a Centre of Excellence set up to bring substantial benefits to the process industries of the UK. CPI is delivering its key business objectives, including research opportunities, partnering and joint ventures and building a competitive cluster.

The New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) is capitalising on the North East of England's world-class science and industrial base to deliver an internationally recognised facility for fast-tracking new and renewable energy research and development through to commercialisation.
